Morocco Ranks 85th in the 2025 Global Capitalism Index

Morocco has ranked 85th out of 161 countries in the 2025 Global Capitalism Index, achieving a score of 61.8 out of 100. The ranking provides an international comparison of the economic institutions and policies that support market activity, offering insights into the conditions in which businesses operate and grow.

Developed by researchers at the University of Virginia in the United States, the index places Morocco ninth among the African countries included in the assessment. Benin ranked 80th globally with a score of 62.8, while Egypt followed closely in 86th place, scoring 60.9.

What Does the Global Capitalism Index Measure?

The Global Capitalism Index examines how effectively countries support market-based economic activity through their institutions, regulations and policies. Its assessment covers eight areas, including market competition, banking stability, property rights, labour market openness, the movement of goods and capital, and the conditions that enable businesses to be established and expand.

Rather than measuring economic performance through a single indicator, the index considers a range of factors that influence how markets function and how businesses can operate within them.

The 2025 edition draws on 213 datasets from sources including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and academic research. It assesses economic and institutional conditions through 2025, providing a comparative snapshot of the environment for market-based activity across 161 countries.

Morocco’s Position Among African Economies

Morocco’s ninth-place position among the African countries assessed offers a further point of comparison for understanding the country’s economic and institutional environment. Its score of 61.8 places it below Benin but slightly ahead of Egypt in the global ranking.

The index considers conditions that can influence entrepreneurship, investment and business development. Factors such as access to finance, competition, property rights and labour market regulations can affect how companies establish operations, develop new activities and respond to changing market conditions.

However, the ranking should be viewed in context. It is an assessment of market-supporting institutions and policies, rather than a direct measure of employment levels, wages, living standards or the overall strength of an economy.

What the Findings Mean for Morocco’s Business Environment

For employers, investors and entrepreneurs, international comparisons can help frame discussions about the conditions needed to support sustainable business growth. A functioning market environment can influence companies’ decisions about expansion, recruitment, investment and the development of new products and services.

For jobseekers, the wider business environment is also relevant. The growth of companies and industries can create demand for different skills, while changes in investment and business activity may influence recruitment priorities and career opportunities.

Understanding these wider economic developments can help professionals make informed decisions about their career plans, identify sectors of interest and consider which skills may support their future prospects.

JobExpo.ma supports Morocco’s recruitment market by connecting employers with candidates through its AI-powered recruitment platform and in-person hiring events.
