Visionary Gibraltar Tunnel Linking Morocco to Spain Could Transform Trade Between Africa and Europe
The project, valued at around £7.4 billion, could create a direct transportation link between Africa and Europe, promising faster, cheaper movement of goods across the continents.
A bold plan to build a railway tunnel beneath the Strait of Gibraltar, linking Morocco and Spain, is gathering momentum after engineers confirmed it is technically possible.
The project, valued at around £7.4 billion, could create a direct transportation link between Africa and Europe, promising faster, cheaper movement of goods across the continents.
German tunnelling experts from Herrenknecht carried out the latest feasibility study, commissioned by the Spanish government in late 2025. Their findings suggest that modern tunnelling technology can tackle the engineering challenges, including the most complex section beneath the Camarinal Threshold, where geological conditions are particularly demanding.
The tunnel is expected to stretch roughly 26 miles, with almost 17 miles submerged underwater, reaching depths of around 420 metres below sea level, which is well beyond the depth of the Channel Tunnel in Europe. Spanish consultancy firm Ineco is set to develop a detailed blueprint by 2027, with government approval expected soon after.
If completed, the project would rank among the world’s longest undersea tunnels and could revolutionise freight logistics between the continents, boosting trade and economic opportunities in the region.
